Zika virus’ effects are broader than first thought

Posted by hitchingupthetrailer on 2016/08/26

This is going from bad to even worse. I don’t know how parents can deal with this virus. If this spreads out of control the impacts to society will be rather large.

Babies may have to deal with far more than small heads.  Zika is disrupting brain development — microcephaly is a frequent result of that, but there can also be issues around the cortex (which is crucial to coordination and memory) that show up first and may only materialize on the outside as the child grows.

IBM developed a ‘magic bullet’ to combat viral infections

Posted by hitchingupthetrailer on 2016/05/13

From Engadget.com
IBM is the last company that I would have expected to get involved in this type of research.

Not sure if we are ready for this type of tech but it seems it is coming to the store near you at some point.

IBM Research and the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) in Singapore have created a new chemical “macromolecule” that could aid in the fight against a wide range of viral diseases like Ebola, Zika, dengue fever, herpes or even influenza. The new chemical was “designed from the ground up” to combat viruses in three ways: by preventing it from infecting healthy cells, stopping the virus’s replication and finally boosting the body’s immune system to help it fight the virus on its own.

For now, however, the two groups are exploring ways to put their new chemical into consumer goods like anti-viral wipes or a vaporized version that could be used in hospitals to prevent further outbreaks.
