Zika virus’ effects are broader than first thought

Posted by hitchingupthetrailer on 2016/08/26

This is going from bad to even worse. I don’t know how parents can deal with this virus. If this spreads out of control the impacts to society will be rather large.

Babies may have to deal with far more than small heads.  Zika is disrupting brain development — microcephaly is a frequent result of that, but there can also be issues around the cortex (which is crucial to coordination and memory) that show up first and may only materialize on the outside as the child grows.

Trump’s Vision of Black America Is a White Supremacist Fantasy

Posted by hitchingupthetrailer on 2016/08/24

It is sad that so many of us think Donalds view on this topic is correct without having any personal experience or doing any fact checking.

I do feel sorry for Akron (http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Akron-Ohio.html) for the increase in some of the crime since 2002, still other types of crime are down. But comparing it to a warzone where your city is bombed, you are starved, shot at, and finding food is a life risking task is not a fair comparison.

It’s clear that Donald Trump’s “black outreach” isn’t actual outreach to black communities. A Trump who wanted to reach black voters would speak to black churches, black colleges, and organizations like the NAACP or the Urban League. The actual Trump, instead, has made his pitch to lily-white audiences in towns and neighborhoods with few black residents. And for good reason. Trump is never going to win more than a token percentage of black voters. If he wants the White House, he’ll need to persuade as many white voters as possible, and a visible commitment to diversity is one way to win over a certain class of right-leaning, suburban whites.

The final living residents of a Gaza Zoo are leaving for new homes. It is sad that due to endless violence they are not safe where they were living. Not that the ZOO was all that great anyway but it is a loss for all that live there.

Gaza’s last tiger Laziz is leaving for a new home and life in a South African sanctuary.

Wow – we won the survival contest with the Neanderthal but are paying a high price.

A team of scientists led by Dr. Ole Andreassen of the University of Oslo in Norway and the University of California, San Diego, has found evidence for an association between genetic risk for schizophrenia and markers of human evolution.
